What to Do in a Dental Emergency

I have tooth pain or discomfort

Take a painkiller like Motrin or Advil. Avoid aspirin because it could worsen bleeding. Then floss and rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If the pain persists, call us immediately.

My tooth has been knocked out/broken

Rinse your tooth completely and either gently place it back in its socket or place it in a container along with some saliva. For broken teeth, try to save all the pieces of the tooth. Use a cold compress to reduce gum swelling.

My gums are bleeding or swollen

Apply firm pressure to the bleeding area with a clean gauze pad for at least 15 minutes. If gums are swollen, you may have a dental abscess. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and call Dr. Bonaventure immediately.

My filling fell off or is loose

Avoid touching the area with your tongue and don’t let anything touch the affected tooth until you make it to our office.

My braces/dentures/dental appliances are broken

Do not try to fix the appliance yourself. You could make it worse and injure your mouth. Leave it as it is until you come in to the office.
